Focusing: An Introduction to Eugene Gendlin's Method of Embodied Mindfulness (4 hours)

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn the Mindful Focusing Steps, the Focusing Attitude, and language to enhance client ability to stay in the present moment with compassion and non-judgment
  • Learn about the history and theory of Focusing and research on its effectiveness
  • Experience the Felt Sense and the inner mindful activity of Clearing A Space
  • Learn how mindfully accepting and setting aside current issues of distress can bring ease in the moment and increase a person's sense of agency
  • Process case consultations

Conference Overview:

This conference will introduce attendees to the mindful therapeutic method developed by Dr. Eugene Gendlin,PhD called Focusing. Attendees will learn through experiential exercises and lecture format the concrete steps and attitude he developed that facilitate deep and lasting growth and change. By experiencing this for themselves, attendees will further their understanding of the power of acceptance and self-compassion, necessary first steps in any change process.  Attendees will be given concrete take-aways to use with themselves and with clients.

About Zena Goldenberg, LCSW

Zena Goldenberg is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Illinois.  She received her B.A. in English Literature and Creative Writing from University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1981.  She holds an M.A in Anthropology from University of Illinois-Chicago from 1988, and earned her MSW at Aurora University in Aurora Illinois in 2005.  Currently she works as a Behavioral Health Integration Clinician at Linden Oaks Medical Group, a part of Northwest-Edward-Elmhurst Healthcare (EEH) in the Chicago area. She serves as the behavioral health point-of- contact and therapist at a primary care physician’s office in Plainfield, IL.  She works alongside Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Physician’s Assistants, Medical Group Managers, Medical Assistants and Support Staff to address patient- and medical practice related issues.  She is also a Certified Focusing Psychotherapist, having completed her training through the certifying body, The International Focusing Institute, in 2006. She has practiced Focusing for over 35 years. Zena has brought Focusing into her work as a therapist in numerous clinical settings, including her current position,  inpatient and outpatient psychiatric hospital clinical care, and in private practice.  She has led experiential and didactic seminars for co-workers in those settings.  She has also led trainings for community therapists, school counselors, social work students, at women’s gatherings, and in spiritual settings.  She has been a co-coordinator of the Midwest Focusing Gathering weekend retreat for the past 3 years.
